E.L. Norry's magical middle-grade novel Fablehouse

The museum is partnering with Bloomsbury Children's Books to spread the word about Fablehouse, a fantasy adventure book for children 8+, inspired by the real-life history of the mixed race children who grew up at the Holnicote House children’s home in Somerset.

Written by E.L. Norry, who is also mixed race and grew up in the care system, the novel draws on the experiences of Britain's 'Brown Babies’ – those born as a result of relationships between Black American GIs and white British women after World War Two became known.

The history behind Fablehouse

The stories of some of the adults who were children at Holnicote House feature in our exhibition, Brown Babies, which is inspired by the research of Professor Lucy Bland. One of these, Ann Evans, also features in a video on our YouTube channel.

Supporting Fablehouse

Chamion Caballero, Director of The Mixed Museum, said: “We’re so pleased to be able to support E.L. Norry, who told us her own moving story when we met a few months ago at the Bloomsbury Children's Showcase 2023. Bloomsbury Children's Publishing have generously given early copies to some of our supporters, who will be sharing their reviews in the coming weeks.”

Grace Ball, Bloomsbury Children's Publicity, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with The Mixed Museum and their incredible digital forum to share the story of Fablehouse by E.L. Norry. Whilst being a work of fiction, this book lends itself to the important history and stories of Britain’s ‘Brown Babies’ and The Mixed Museum is the perfect platform to help share this.”
